Once this feature is enabled, ChatGPT will display a screen with optional buttons for signing up or logging in, following the prompt “How can I help you today?” OpenAI has announced that access to this feature will be rolled out gradually, advising those who do not see the option immediately to check back later.

In an effort to safeguard the integrity of the platform, OpenAI has implemented additional protections for users who access ChatGPT without an account, including restrictions on certain prompts and limitations on image rendering capabilities. These measures are more stringent than those applied to logged-in users. According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the development of this feature included considerations of potential new threats that could arise from the use of GPT-3.5 by logged-out users.

The spokesperson further explained that teams dedicated to detecting and preventing the misuse of AI models have been closely involved in the rollout of this new feature and are prepared to make adjustments should any unforeseen threats emerge.

For users who choose to remain signed out, there is an option to disable the use of their prompts for training data. This can be done by clicking the small question mark next to the text box, selecting Settings, and turning off the “Optimize model for everyone” option.

With over 100 million weekly users from 185 countries, ChatGPT has achieved remarkable growth in just 18 months—a significant feat for a company that was relatively unknown two years ago. OpenAI’s latest move aims to further increase these numbers by attracting those who may have been reluctant to create an account, encouraging them to explore the capabilities of this advanced chatbot.
